Mark Webber has revealed he was driving with a broken shoulder in the final four races of this year’s Formula One season.
The Red Bull driver’s dreams of becoming the first Australian to win the F1 title since 1980 faded during that period as teammate Sebastian Vettel captured the world championship.
Webber revealed the injury, sustained in a mountain bike accident, in his new book and said he had to have pain-killing injections before races in Japan and Korea.
He refused to blame the injury for his failure to win the title and kept it secret from his team boss Christian Horner.
Webber sustained the injury a week before the Japanese Grand Prix in early October but the fine fracture could not be treated.
It was the second time in under two years that Webber had suffered an injury while training on a mountain bike.
SMH Reports today.

What do you do when being a formula one driver isn’t dangerouse enough?

Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling.
~ James E. Starrs
So, after the Orthopedic surgeon’s appointment yesterday I have a plan. Good news is no surgery required. Then the bad news - 10 weeks of frustration ahead:
week 1 – Ortho appointment, pain killers, ice twice a day, keep the f@cking thing still.
week 2 – repeat steps 2 through 4 above.
week 3 – New x-rays to check healing is going ok. Visit Ortho to make sure shit is going to plan.
Week 4 – If healing start physio, if not healing plan surgery.
Week 5 – More physio, try to work out if anything else is wrong with my shoulder.
Week 6 – More physio, start swimming
Week 7 – Bone is strong enough to ride but not strong enough for contact sports or a crash. Ride at own risk.
Week 8 – See week 7
Week 9 – Should be back on deck with depleted muscle strength in upper body. Begin riding and building strength.
Week 10 - Shred.
Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.
